God\'s Own Celebration (Festivals of Kerala)
Kerala is a land replete with festivals. Festivals here are interwoven with the unique cultural and traditional practices of the land. Not a day passes without celebrating a festival in some part of the state.
The collection of picture postcards – ‘God’s Own Celebration’ has 10 colourful postcards on some of the outstanding festivals of Kerala and ceremonies as part of festivals. The collection includes festivals like the Machattu Mamangam, Uthralikkavu Pooram, Thrissur Pooram, Kodungalloor Bharani, Kalpathy Ratholsavam, Kottiyur festival; events like the Snake Boat race, ceremonial processions like the Kettukazhcha and ritual performances like the Theyyam.
Kuthiravela, a colourful procession carrying the effigies of horses is what differentiates Machattu Mamankam or Machattu Vela from other festivals. Uthralikkavu Pooram is the eight-day long annual festival of Sree Ruthira Mahakalikavu Temple at Wadakkancherry in Thrissur. The Thrissur Pooram is the most spectacular of temple festivals noted for its grand display of fireworks, caparisoned elephants and traditional massed orchestra. Kottiyur temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva is located in the dense forest on the shores of River Bavali in Kannur District.
The Kalpathi Ratholsavam or chariot procession held annually at Kalpathi, a village in Palakkad district is one of the unique festivals of Kerala. Kodungalloor Bharani is the occasion to witness the coming together of hundreds of oracles. It is held during the Malayalam month of Meenam. Theyyam performances are ritualistic in nature and are popular in the northern districts of Kerala. And the majestic Snake Boats or the Chundan Valloms of Kerala can be seen ripping the backwaters of Punnamada in Alappuzha District, during the annual Jawaharlal Nehru boat race.
